Regional Finals
The Regional Final took place in Auckland on 25-27th September. It was hosted by AUT University, sponsored by WiseTech Global and Facebook.
The Divisional Contests, sponsored by IBM, were held on Saturday 22nd August at 13 sites across the South Pacific Region. The South Pacific Region Divisional contests were held on Saturday 22nd with 73 teams competing. It follows a series of ANZAC competitions where the students could learn and develop their problem solving and programming skills readying themselves for the ‘big one’. The region is geographically very large as it covers Australia, New Zealand and Fiji so it is divided into 3 divisions and 13 contest sites to make sure that students are able to compete as a site near where they live and study. The 25 universities who participated were competing for the right to advance to the Regional Finals in Auckland, New Zealand, next month. There they will compete for 2 places at the World Finals next year in Phuket. While the contest was held simultaneously across the divisions, each division had its own problem set. The three problem sets were constructed by a wonderful team of people who started the process this time last year. Python was offered for the first time with 23 teams making 165 submissions, a clear demonstration of its widespread use and popularity. The contest ran smoothly over the 13 sites using DOMjudge and at some sites, IBM staff came and helped out and feedback from them indicated that they thought it was a great and fun activity for the students. IBM, as sponsor, also provided the t-shirts, goodies and food for the event, much to the appreciation of the students. Raewyn Boersen, Super Region Contest Director

Regional Contest
The event was spread over two days and at the opening ceremony, all were welcomed by the host university, AUT by Jairo Gutierrez, the Head of Computer Sciences. AUT was a fine host and the lab and rooms we used were in the Paul Reeves Building which has won architectural awards. Phil Robbins worked hard behind the scenes making sure all the systems worked as we wanted them to and coaches and site directors helped out on the contest floor delivering print outs and balloons for each problem a team solved. Our Technology Talk, which focusses on interesting industry developments, was taken by Gareth Cronin of the Wynyard Group. This is a NZ company that specialises in fighting crime from their desks and Gareth gave us some insights into an area that does not seek publicity and about which we all knew very little.
Not only did Auckland turn on the sunshine for the 2nd annual Regional Finals for our South Pacific Region (making the gift of umbrellas to all contestants superfluous – but it is Spring!), it was also a cracker of a contest. Twelve teams were challenged by an interesting set of problems developed by a large team of judges headed by Malcolm Corney and Darcy Best. The problems were noticeably a step up in difficulty from the Divisional Contests and all teams managed to solve at least one problem.
The students had all expenses paid for when they reached Auckland, plus free tickets to the Skytower, thanks to Wisetech Global and Facebook. Adelie and Cody from Wisetech added a new dimension with some fun and games with chocolate fish as rewards, a previously unknown NZ icon to most Australians. It was a great team event, for the students and the coaches and site co-ordinators. We congratulate the two teams who won the right to advance to the World Finals in Phuket next May and wish UNSW and UWA all the best; we are sure they will represent us well. Divisional Finals
Western Divisional Finals
On the 22nd of August 35 teams from 9 Universities competed for the right to represent their University at the South Pacific Regional Final. Four sites: Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Hobart, hosted the competition and the day went very smoothly. The competition was won by Monash Pi (from Monash) with OLDBOYS and Team Tam from the University of Melbourne coming second and third respectively. The teams qualifying for the Regional Final are Monash Pi, OLDBOYS, Off by Wonders (The University of Western Australia, 4th) and UofA1 (The University of Adelaide, 5th).
A special mention should go to the school teams, L5 Electro Master, with 3 problems solved in 15th place, and Port22Pirates with 2 problems solved in 24th place.
The competition was run very smoothly and relied on a lot of effort from many volunteers. Malcolm Corney (Queensland) and Darcy Best (Melbourne) did an excellent job coordinating the problem set, Richard Lobb (New Zealand) managed the on-line environment, and each site was supported by a host of volunteers. They did an incredible job, and the competition ran very smoothly. Congratulations to all of them.
Thanks to everyone who helped out preparing the IT systems, organising catering, building access etc, and a big thanks to the students and competitors who participated and organised training sessions.

Western Division Contest Director
